Patients in hospitals or prisoners may need to be visited by a representative of their religious community. Read about the special opportunities.
Both Danish ministers and religious workers in Denmark have special opportunities to visit hospitals and prisons.
Everyone must have permission from the prison or the jail if they want to visit an inmate. The inmate is responsible for sending an application form to the person who is to visit. The visitor must then fill it in and return it. The application form is available from the prison staff.
The prison or the jail handles the application. If the inmate is in custody, the police may oppose a visit or decide that visits must take place under supervision. Otherwise, visits are normally not supervised by staff.
It normally takes no more than a week to obtain a reply.
Contact the Danish Prison and Probation Service to get more information.
Danish hospital chaplains are employed by the Danish State Church and offer support and assistance to patients and their relatives. Other religious communities may also establish similar arrangements.
